EDF Energy
EDF Energy is one of the UK’s largest energy companies. It provides power to a quarter of the UK’s population via its electricity distribution networks in London, the South East and the East of England.
EDF supplies gas and electricity to over 5 million customers and generate about 5GW of energy from coal and gas power stations, as well as combined heat and power plants and wind farms. The company is also a key player in national infrastructure projects, including the electrical upgrading of the London Underground, management of private electricity networks serving four London airports and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the country’s first new railway in 100 years. The company employs nearly 13,000 people at locations across the UK. EDF Energy is a core part of EDF Group, one of the world’s largest power companies.
EMS has worked closely with EDF for over ten years, originally supplying print room services and aided by our strong technical heritage we have been able to extend other services over the years to assist EDF with many different projects. This has enabled EMS to gain valuable experience within this field.
Scope of Work
EMS undertakes extensive editing and modifications to existing electrical circuit drawings, in addition to creating new layouts and plans to strict EDF specification. We use specialist CAD software, MicroStation and AutoCAD in conjunction with raster editing software to carry out this task. Work is produced at our offices; alternatively, we supply contract personnel to work in our customers’ offices.
EMS is contracted to attend 132/33kV sub-stations in addition to public highways to survey, plot and record the final route position of new or previously installed 132/33/11kV ducted cables and hardware. Notes on all potential hazards, obstructions, burial conditions along with cable joints and information must be carefully recorded and draughted on the final record drawings which are held on file for future reference.
EMS has undertook a large plan scanning task. From the site, we collected batches of plans, drawings and other documents, which all had to be electronically scanned into an agreed format. The scans were cropped, cleaned, adjusted to the best quality and finally indexed using a unique identifying number before being returned, these have subsequently been imported onto a network server and used daily for reference.
EMS assembled a team of six personnel at very short notice; this was to work on PCs in our offices. The task was to extrapolate data from a wide variety of index cards and sheets, approximately 40,000 rows of entry were entered into excel spreadsheets across ten fields of enquiry. The resulting data was uploaded to a specialist document management system called Project Wise and subsequently linked to plans and other documents previously captured by EMS as described in the paragraph above. Due to the large amount of data to be entered and the very tight timeframe, special consideration was given to quality control to minimise errors.
Summary
As with all EMS Full Service Account customers, there are numerous other smaller projects that are undertaken on an ad-hoc daily basis in the case of EDF these include; full Print Room Support, production of Technical Manuals/Reports, Graphic Display Posters and Contract Personnel. We
believe there can be many benefits derived from companies working closely together. In this instance, EDF Energy has been helped to meet deadlines by using EMS’ support services. EMS has increased its understanding and thus market share of such services, which has allowed investment in technology to achieve sustainable growth.
